In the six years without football at Digital Pioneers Academy, CEO Mashea Ashton longed to build a community around sports. She only wishes she could have done it sooner.
From Halloween 2022 to July 2023, the public charter school in Southeast Washington saw four students killed in separate shootings: Antoine Manning, 14; Jakhi Snider, 16; DeMarcos Pinckney, 15; and Jaylin Osborne, 15. Three of them, Ashton said, wanted to play football.
“I really do believe this: If we had had football, maybe they would still have been active and busy. They wouldn’t have had as much free time on their hands, and they honestly might still be with us,” Ashton said. “So we really launched football in their honor.”
Now, that football team is a symbol of all the young school can be. Playing its first full season at the varsity level, DPA is 5-0 after a 32-6 win over Phelps on Friday. It is in first place in the Public Charter School Athletic Association and has allowed just 14 points. It’s a winning program built exceptionally fast.
