They took the field at home games to “The Hanging Tree,” a soaring, anthemic 2014 folk song from James Newton Howard. Gonzaga (D.C.) coach Jeff King is asked about the choice; it came from the movie “The Hunger Games,” perhaps a reference to Gonzaga’s quest for its first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title since 2019?
“Oh I have no idea,” King says. “That was all from the seniors. They control their own destiny on the music front. As long as the lyrics are clean I stay out of it.”
The 18 seniors at Gonzaga did more than pick the pregame song list. They also were the main reason the Eagles checked several items off their preseason to-do list. Top of the list was winning the WCAC title; and before 2,500 fans at Georgetown University in mid-May, the Eagles turned the trick in an 11-10 victory over St. John’s (DC). Gonzaga also defeated standouts Bullis (Md.) and Georgetown Prep (Md.); went 2-0 on a spring break trip to Florida; and defeated Paul VI (Va.) after losing twice to the Panthers last year.
The all-senior attack of Freddy Fowler (52G, 33A, 36GB), Johnny Gardiner (48G, 19A) and Charlie McNamara (35G, 15A) each took a turn in the spotlight. Fowler (Colgate) scored five goals in the victory over Georgetown Prep; at times he single-handedly kept the Eagles in the contest.
