The family of a late 16-year-old Montgomery County private school student is suing his former school over alleged bullying that led to his death in 2022.
In documents shared with 7News on Thursday, the parents of Charlie Schnell, Dawn and Scott, alleged that teachers and leaders at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland failed to protect the then-sophomore from bullying and rumors about alleged drawings. They also claimed that the school failed to warn Dawn and Scott that Charlie was in a “zone of possible danger” despite allegedly knowing of Charlie’s highly vulnerable state.
At the time of the bullying, during the 2021-2022 school year, the parents claimed that Landon School did not have a written anti-bullying policy that required investigations, anonymous reporting, or mandated notification to the parents of bullied students.
According to the 81-page lawsuit, Charlie suffered through several traumatic events, including the death of a classmate and close friend’s father, fear from multiple school shooting threats made by a fellow student, a serious concussion, and sustained bullying and isolation.
In one part of the claim, the parents allege that one of Charlie’s teachers read an entry from his classroom journal about his turmoil, and did not inform the parents of the entry. Another part of the claim alleges that witnesses saw the same teacher “marching on campus” with students who made audible threats / expressed anger toward Charlie. Landon School, they claim, did not investigate or quell the anger.
