Everybody loves an underdog.
For many years, the Bishop Ireton boys’ tennis team, who compete for the Catholic preparatory in Alexandria, Virginia, was near the bottom of the WCAC conference. Not this year though.
The Bishop Ireton Cardinals just finished a championship season, inspiring their head coach to continue his own personal fight.
For almost a year, coach Tom Noone has been battling extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma, an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer.
“There were a lot of days where I didn’t want to practice,” Noone said. “I figured if they were going to work that hard for me, I wouldn’t take a day off.”
Through the entire season, Noone has been fighting. Six rounds of chemotherapy. Four sessions of immuno-therapy.
The team used his strength as their strength on the court. Earlier this month, Bishop Ireton won it’s first ever WCAC Tournament Championship.
