Benedictine will find itself on the national stage when it plays DeMatha (Md.) in a football showcase at Ironton at 5 p.m. on Sept. 10.
The Week 4 showdown features two tradition-rich programs in the Bengals and the Stags.
“It’s a great opportunity and great exposure for our young men and our school,” Benedictine coach Jarritt Goode said. “We are both high-profile programs. We appreciate the opportunity.”
Goode said the OHSAA’s decision to expand the football playoffs from eight qualifiers per division to 16 opens up opportunities for such high-level games because there is more leeway to qualify for postseason play.
“I think you’ll see more of this, especially with schools not as afraid to get outside the box with the way playoffs are now,” Goode said. “Teams don’t think about counting computer points as much. I like that. Plus, it’s exposure for our young men through a memorable opportunity.”
