Donnie Freeman, an elite prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, announced on Thursday that he would attend Syracuse University.

Freeman, a 6-foot-8 forward at St. John’s College High School in Washington D.C., picked Syracuse over other finalists Texas, Alabama, Georgia Tech and Iowa. He made his decision official during an announcement ceremony at his high school.

“Syracuse basketball is back,’’ Freeman said after making his announcement in a live-stream on 247Sports.com. “That’s my goal. To bring home a national championship.’’

During the 2022-23 season at St. John’s College High, Freeman averaged 21 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He is playing for Team Takeover on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit. In the EYBL’s opening weekend in Atlanta two weeks ago, Freeman averaged 10.5 points, 6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 20 minutes per game.

Freeman becomes the first high school recruit to commit to the Orange since Jim Boeheim retired and former assistant Adrian Autry was promoted to head coach. Syracuse had stepped up its pursuit of Freeman after Autry became the head coach.
