We’ve seen a number of shooting scares at high school football games this year, and now basketball is dealing with the same issue.

Fans packed the gymnasium at Wise High School (Maryland) on Saturday to see Bronny James and his Sierra Canyon (California) teammates take on local powerhouse DeMatha Catholic in the “DMV Showcase” preseason event.

The night took a scary turn, however, and the game ended prematurely with players and spectators alike rushing out of the gym.

With less than two minutes remaining in the exhibition game and DeMatha (playing as the Hyattsville Stags) leading 52-51 against Sierra Canyon (playing as California Basketball Club), a fight reportedly broke out in the stands and someone screamed about seeing a gun.

It’s unclear if a gun was actually pulled out during the incident, but the hysteria caused by the fight was enough to clear out the gym and end the night earlier than expected.

In an age where shootings have become increasingly more common, any loud, unexpected noise can send a crowd into a panic, and it appears that’s what happened at this high-profile event.

James and CBC are scheduled to play again on the second day of the event, this time against a “District Eagles” team consisting of players from Gonzaga Prep (Washington, DC).
