Although it has captured the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Metro Division championship in four of the last five seasons, the St. Mary’s Ryken High School football team perhaps takes just as much pride beating WCAC Capital Division squads in its few chances to play against the upper tier division.
Last Saturday afternoon, St. Mary’s Ryken (3-0) capitalized on one of those rare opportunities to tackle WCAC Capital opponents when the Knights defeated host McNamara 14-9 in Forestville. The Knights took advantage of several McNamara miscues over the course of the contest and missed out on another one en route to opening the season with its third straight victory.
“I was really pleased with our defense,” St. Mary’s Ryken third-year coach Gary Wynn said. “We made some really big stops. We took advantage of some good scoring chances and those were really set up by our defense. Our offense did just enough today. Most of these guys are young, but they’re playing with a lot of poise and a lot of confidence.”
