Steve Turner has been the head basketball coach at Gonzaga College High School for 17 years, replacing the longtime Dick Myers after his 29-year run. Turner continued the Eagle’s success and then some – earning five WCAC Coach of the Year awards, the first ever Gatorade Coach of the Year award in 2015 and leading Gonzaga to the No.1 ranking in 2007.

Turner also has had experience on the international scene.

Hee was named the head coach for the USA Men’s Nike Hoop Summit Team on Feb. 14, 2023. Prior to that promotion, he served as an assistant on the 2022 U17 national team, helping the U16 team to a 6-0 record and a gold medal at the 2022 FIBA Americas U16 Men’s championship.

The Springfield Student sat down with Turner to dive into what he’s learned over the years, his favorite part about being a coach and more.

Student: What is your favorite part of coaching?

Turner: The ability to serve and be able to help young men achieve and work towards their dreams. The most rewarding thing for me as a coach is seeing them after they leave me, and what they’re able to do – what colleges they’re able to go play at and even play professionally. For me, it’s just being able to use the game as a vehicle for them to be able to take to their next [stop].

Student: Who are some coaches that have influenced you in your career?

Turner: Of course the man that I took over for at Gonzaga, Dick Myers. He gave me an opportunity to work with him for five years and then really pushed hard for me to be the next head coach and that came to fruition. Mike Brey (former Notre Dame head coach) has always been a long time good friend, someone I can lean on. Coach Jay Wright (former Villanova head coach and a member of the Hall of Fame class of ‘21) coached one of my guys, Kris Jenkins, who helped him win a national title. I mean, there’s many of them in the business, but those are a few.

Student: You’ve coached team USA in international competitions, what are some things you learned in those experiences?

Turner: Oh, many things. I say this all the time when I go to those camps, if I don’t bring something back that I can give to my team, then I failed myself and I failed my team. In those opportunities and those situations you’re coaching the best players in the world, along with being able to work with like-minded and different minded coaches who can give who we take time to share the wisdom and the things we do within our own programs to each other. [Again], If you’re not learning, then you’re failing. So for me, it’s always trying to be able to bring something back that I can bring to my team.
