Pitt men’s basketball entered this summer knowing it needed to reload the backcourt with some important losses expected next offseason. The first step in that process was completed Wednesday, when Omari Witherspoon — a three-star guard, per On3 and Rivals — announced he had committed to Jeff Capel’s program.
Witherspoon, who attends St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., cut down his list of schools to three last week and announced on a YouTube livestream hosted by 247Sports that he had chosen Pitt over offers from other finalists Maryland and Vanderbilt. He’s the first player from the Class of 2025 to give a verbal commitment to the Panthers.
Witherspoon’s recruitment moved quickly. He first earned a scholarship offer from the Panthers in July and at that point held just six offers from power-conference schools. After the Panthers extended an offer, Clemson and Oklahoma State joined Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Xavier, West Virginia and others in offering Witherspoon.
