Penn State added to its 2023 recruiting class less than two weeks until signing day.
Defensive end Joseph Mupoyi verbally committed to the Nittany Lions on Monday, bringing their 2023 class to 20 members ahead of the Dec. 21 signing period.
Mupoyi is a four-star prospect according to on3 and a three-star recruit on 247 Sports and Rivals. The St. Thomas More (Conn.) standout committed to Penn State following an official visit to Happy Valley this past weekend.
Mupoyi’s path to Penn State wasn’t straightforward. A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the 6-foot-5 playmaker began his high school career as a basketball player at Archbishop Carroll in Washington, D.C. He only started playing football last year and transferred to St. Thomas More for his senior season.
Mupoyi’s athleticism intrigued several Power Five schools. Michigan, Utah, Miami, Ole Miss, Maryland and Auburn also offered the 235-pounder. But Penn State had the edge going into this weekend and was successful in securing his verbal commitment.
