      Before a little over four minutes remained in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s sloshing Washington Catholic Athletic Conference football championship game — before No. 1 Good Counsel’s seniors hydroplaned on the turf and puffed on celebratory cigars in the locker room following a 7-0 win over No. 3 DeMatha — the most talented senior class in the D.C. area had only known what almost tasted like.

      And then, lurking near the DeMatha sideline at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, came Judah Jenkins.

      The cornerback had been through a lot, Good Counsel Coach Andy Stefanelli said, as every senior on his team had. With four of the nation’s top 200 members of the Class of 2024 per 247Sports’ composite rankings, they had been touted as the area’s “it” class, had spent parts of the past three seasons as the area’s top-ranked team and had fallen short each time.

      And then, four years after Stefanelli told his class it would bring a trophy back to Olney — once the players had the requisite hunger that follows a postseason exit, once they had a bevy of seniors with four years of varsity experience, once they were tough enough to grind out a lead — senior lineman Darien Mayo tipped the ball and Jenkins read the deflection perfectly, ensuring the diving, game-sealing interception was tucked into his elbows at DeMatha’s 31-yard line, cushioned away from the puddled turf.
