The Blue Devils will have a new familiar face on the bench this season.
On Thursday, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that former Duke guard Tyler Thornton would be joining the program as an assistant coach. Thornton previously served as an assistant and the director of player development at Howard under fellow Brotherhood member Kenny Blakeney.
Thornton spent four years as a player in Durham, assuming a featured role in the 2013-14 as a team captain. During that season, he shot 45% from beyond the arc and compiled 79 assists in NCAA Tournament play as the Blue Devils advanced to the Elite Eight.
As a coach, Thornton will bring a strong player development background as well as intimate recruiting ties to the DMV area — a region Duke has historically recruited well in. During his high school career, the guard was a star at Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C., and was also named Gatorade Player of the Year in 2010 for the district.
