Midway through the third quarter of a 70-61 victory over Maret on Saturday, with the win already within their grasp, the players on Georgetown Prep’s bench erupted into applause. The source of their excitement and pride was a five-second call, that rare defensive feat earned by the right amount of energy and effort.
The Hoyas played well all afternoon against the Frogs at Georgetown Day School, steadily growing their lead with some smooth playmaking and execution. But nothing got the team quite as excited as that five-second call.
“Those types of little plays are huge. They spark everything for us,” junior guard Akbar Waheed III said. “We harp on grit a lot. We always want to be the tougher team. We want that to be our identity as a group.”
The meeting between No. 8 Georgetown Prep (10-2) and Maret (10-3) was one of the more intriguing matchups in Saturday’s IAC/MAC Challenge, an annual day-long event that pits programs from the Interstate Athletic Conference against challengers from the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference. The private school leagues are consistently home to some of themost talented teams in the D.C. area.
