Coaching Changes for Good Counsel Football

Good Counsel announced Monday that the football program would enter a new phase of leadership for the 2026 season as Sal Gorgone was named the new Head Football Coach after serving in various roles for the Falcons the past sixteen years. Most recently, Gorgone was the varsity defensive coordinator and assistant head coach under Andy Stefanelli, a 1983 graduate of Good Counsel who has been with the program since 2009 and took over as Head Coach when Bob Milloy retired in 2017.

“We are grateful for the dedication and service of alumnus Andy Stefanelli ’83 during his time with the program,” Good Counsel wrote to the school. “As an alum, he brought a deep understanding of our school and athletic tradition, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The well wishes to Stefanelli were quickly questioned online by Drew Stefanelli, who took to X to state the following:

“My dad didn’t resign or retire. GC fired him without reason,” Stefanelli wrote. “Went on to hire his D-coordinator as his replacement within the hour of firing him???? Wonder how long this was in the works under the table. AD and your D-coordinator plotting against you. Hard to win when people you trust are stabbing you in the back.

“My dad graduated from GC ‘83, sent all 5 of his kids to GC because he believed in the place. Starting coaching freshmen football in 2009, worked his way up the ranks and eventually took over for Bob Milloy (his mentor) in 2017. He put everything he had into that place. Up to this point I was a proud alum. Proud to rep GC. But how can I represent a school that throws an alumni under the bus like he didn’t do anything in his 16 years of dedication to the school. He didn’t coach for the fame, or the recognition, or the money, he did it for the players. To prepare them as young men to have an opportunity to play at the next level. He also did it to help develop them into good people, beyond football. Prepare these young men for their future. He made it about the players, not him. And GC sees no value in that.”

Stefanelli led Good Counsel to WCAC Championships in 2019 and 2023.

Dear Good Counsel Community,

We are writing to share an important update regarding our football program. Good Counsel is entering a new phase of leadership as we continue to build on the strong foundation of Falcon Football.

We are pleased to announce that Sal Gorgone has been named Head Football Coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. Coach Gorgone is deeply rooted in the Good Counsel Football Program, having served on our staff for sixteen years. His appointment reflects our commitment to continuity, excellence, and the long-term strength of a program recognized nationally for both competitive success and the development of young men of character.

Coach Gorgone’s leadership is well known to our student-athletes and families, and his experience ensures a smooth and steady transition. He has progressed through every level of the program, serving five years as the freshman linebackers coach, followed by roles as freshman defensive coordinator and JV defensive coordinator. Since 2017, he has served as the varsity defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. During that time, Good Counsel reached four championship games (2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024) and captured WCAC championships in 2019 and 2023.

“I am very excited to lead the program at Good Counsel, which has a great tradition,” said Coach Gorgone. “My philosophy is to pursue athletic excellence, academic accountability, the development of young men’s character, and personal growth.”

Throughout his career, Coach Gorgone has demonstrated a strong commitment to program development, staff collaboration, and student-athlete mentorship. Known for his detail-oriented approach and focus on character formation, he places equal emphasis on athletic excellence, academic accountability, and personal growth. His vision aligns closely with our mission and with the systems and values that have defined Good Counsel Football for decades.

We are grateful for the dedication and service of alumnus Andy Stefanelli ’83 during his time with the program. As an alum, he brought a deep understanding of our school and athletic tradition, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

Coach Gorgone will meet with the entire football program today at 3:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center and will connect with families and staff in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition as he steps into this role.

Thank you for your continued support of Good Counsel Athletics. Please join us in welcoming Coach Sal Gorgone as our new Head Football Coach. We move forward with confidence and unity as we continue building on the strong foundation of Falcon Football.

Sincerely,
Edward Owusu ’89, Principal
Steve Howes ’91, Athletic Director
