Remembering George Leftwich
Nova Notebook: Reflecting on Leftwich’s Legacy at Villanova
On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, of West Orange, NJ. Beloved husband of the late Mary Natalie Leftwich; father of George, Jr. and Brian (Kara) Leftwich; grandfather of Samantha and Eli; brother of Willie L. Leftwich and the late Ezalia Leftwich.
George was born in Washington, DC to the late Willie Lorenzo and Maude Ida Leftwich. As a youth in DC, George gained acclaim on the competitive playground basketball courts. Through this and his continued success in basketball at Archbishop Carroll High School and Villanova University, George forged lifelong meaningful friendships both on and off the court. He had a unique way of quietly connecting with everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
He continued to touch lives as he worked as a coach, educator and athletic director in the D.C. Metropolitan area including Archbishop Carroll High School, Sidwell Friends, Gwynn Park and UDC. George also actively mentored and coached his own sons, George, Jr. and Brian. He was inducted into several basketball Hall of Fames including the Washington Metropolitan Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He will be dearly missed.
As a fun-loving family man, George will be remembered for his enjoyment in bringing family together for gatherings and holidays, as well as creating plentiful custom-made tee shirts, cups and keychains to commemorate each occasion. George spent the last four and a half years living in New Jersey, close to his grandchildren, and enjoyed attending their sporting events regularly. This time will be cherished forever.
