The WCAC’s Pipeline to the NFL

Article written by Pierre Weil.

Here is your weekend football schedule

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) is well-known for having elite basketball players – many of which have had long and successful NBA careers. But in the past 10-15 years, there has been a movement on the football field that has seen this league transition from a dominant local catholic football league to a legitimate pipeline to the NFL. With Week One in the NFL in the books, here’s a look at every WCAC school with current NFL players, and how some of them performed last weekend.

DEMATHA CATHOLIC (HYATTSVILLE, MD)
1. Chase Young – DE for the Saints
2. Rodney McLeod – DB for the Browns
3. Olusegun Oluwatimi – OL for the Seahawks
4. DJ Turner – WR for the Raiders
5. Josh Wallace – DB for the Rams
6. Nick Cross – DB for the Colts
7. Ja’Whaun Bentley – LB for the Patriots
8. DeMarcco Hellams – DB for the Falcons
9. MarShawn Lloyd – RB for the Packers

Week One Recap: With almost as many athletes as the other schools combined, DeMatha was well-represented last weekend. Nick Cross played every snap (79) for the Colts at Safety, recording 14 tackles – 3rd-highest in the NFL in Week One. JaWhaun Bentley played all the snaps for the Patriots at LB and finished their upset win with 12 tackles and 0.5 sacks. Chase Young made his debut for the Saints, playing 37 snaps and recording two QB hits. Rodney McLeod played 14 snaps at Safety for the Cleveland Browns. DJ Turner played five snaps for the Raiders and caught his only target of the day for a gain of 9 yards. Josh Wallace played two snaps for the Rams

GOOD COUNSEL (OLNEY, MD)
1. Stefon Diggs – WR for the Texans
2. Kendall Fuller – CB for the Dolphins
3. Cam Hart – CB for the Chargers
4. Josh Paschal – DE for the Lions
5. Sam Mustipher – C for the Chargers
6. Kris Jenkins — DT for the Bengals

Week One Recap: Along with DeMatha’s Nick Cross, Stefon Diggs had arguably the most impact of any WCAC alumni in Week One. In Digg’s 61 snaps for the Houston Texans, the 2012 Good Counsel graduate caught all 6 of his targets for 33 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kendall Fuller played every defensive snap for the Dolphins in their win, finishing with 6 tackles. Josh Paschal recorded 22 snaps for the Lions.

GONZAGA COLLEGE (WASHINGTON, D.C.)
1. Caleb Williams – QB for the Bears
2. Olumuyiwa Fashanu – OL for the Jets
3. Jordan Colbert — Safety for the Dolphins

Week One Recap: The only two active alumni from Gonzaga College are Caleb Williams and Olumuyiwa Fashanu – both a part of the 2018 WCAC Title team. Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had a shaky debut for the Chicago Bears, finishing 14/29 with 93 yards and no scores in their win over the Titans. Fashanu did not see action on Monday night for the Jets.

ARCHBISHOP CARROLL (WASHINGTON, D.C.)
1. Anton Harrison – OL for the Jaguars
2. Olusegun Oluwatimi – OL for the Seahawks

Week One Recap: Anton Harrison played every snap at right tackle for the Jaguars.

ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE (WASHINGTON, D.C.)

Week One Recap: Jarrett did not appear in the Buccaneers Week One win.

Week One Recap: Anderson started at right guard and played every snap for the Steelers 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
