      The Washington Post high school sports staff spent the 2022-23 academic year on fields and in gyms across the D.C. area, chronicling championship teams, stellar coaches and outstanding athletes. Now, with the fall, winter and spring seasons completed, it’s time to look back at how those results shook out.

      Across all sports, The Post tallied more than 1,700 All-Met selections along with hundreds of postseason results and end-of-season rankings. We wanted to determine the top teams in each of the following groups:

      D.C. public schools
      Maryland public schools
      Virginia public schools
      Private schools (boys)
      Private schools (girls)
      Using a well-considered — if unscientific — scoring system, we assigned points to various categories. A No. 1 end-of season ranking (20 points), for instance, was worth more than a state or league runner-up finish (10 points), which was worth more than an All-Met honorable mention (one point).
