His experience as an athlete includes stints with several local clubs, Hydrosonic Tiburones, AquaHoyas, and RMSC, as well as 11 years in MCSL. Dunckel was a four-year varsity letterman during his time as a student-athlete at St. John’s, setting school records in the 100-yard breastroke and 200-yard I.M, and captaining the team his senior season.
After graduation, Dunckel attended the University of Miami (FL) and was an active member of the school’s club swim team. He also walked had an association with the football team at Miami, where he learned from top-of-the-line strength and conditioning programs and coaches. After graduation, he spent several years traveling and living abroad before returning to the DC area to begin teaching at St. John’s.
Dunckel’s first coaching experience came in MCSL at Regency Estates Swim Club, where he also managed the pool and taught swim lessons. Upon his 2020 arrival at St. John’s, he was recruited to be an assistant coach by Tony Murray and was promoted to assistant head coach under prior head coach, Morgan Ware ’12. Dunckel is a passionate presence on deck, constantly seeking to inspire his swimmers to their highest potential. His goal is to create an environment where swimmers feel supported, motivated, and safe, so that they may develop healthy relationships with their coaches and teammates and maintain a lifelong passion for the sport.
