KeymasterMason So is no stranger to the Spalding Hoophall Classic. Sunday morning, he suited up on the Springfield hardwood for the second time in his career. The 6-foot-2 DeMatha Catholic High School (MD) senior recently committed to the University of North Carolina Greensboro. The Stags defeated Bishop Loughlin High School (NY) 66-55 in DeMatha’s only game this weekend. In 23 minutes of action, So finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, leading DeMatha to its 12th victory of the season.
The Springfield Student sat down with So to learn more about the path that led him to where he is now.
How does it feel to return to the Hoophall Classic representing DeMatha?
“It was great. The environment, being able to visit the Hall of Fame, (it) gets you going and excited to play.”
How do you think your game has improved since transferring?
“I think it’s improved the fact that I can score off the dribble. Last time I was here, I was a catch and shoot guy. I’ve worked on my handles and improved my game.”
Who inspires you and how?
“My dad. He has brought me up coaching me my whole life, teaching me all the fundamentals. He made me the player I am today.”
What are your future goals?
“I’ve always wanted to play professional basketball – it’s my dream.”
Does committing to UNCG lift some stress off your senior season?
“Yeah, it definitely does. Going through that process was kind of nerve racking, and I didn’t want to make the wrong decision. But now that it’s over, I feel better now. I’m just hooping now.”
Would you call yourself a leader on the team?
“I’d say so, I always try to step it up.”
Favorite NBA player/team?
“My favorite player is Stephen Curry and my favorite team is the Golden State Warriors.”
