The Washington Nationals promoted top prospect James Wood to Class AA Harrisburg on Sunday, then Wood immediately debuted for the Senators, batting third at the Reading Fightin Phils. Wood met the challenge by singling on the first pitch he saw in his first at-bat. He finished 1 for 4 with a strikeout.

The move to Harrisburg came after Wood, a 20-year-old outfielder, collected nine hits and three home runs in his last five games with high Class A Wilmington. He was one of five prospects netted in the Juan Soto trade last summer, highlighting the group of MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell III and Jarlin Susana. A left-handed hitter, Wood left Wilmington with a .293 average, a .392 on-base percentage and a .580 slugging percentage (.972 OPS), including eight homers and five triples. But maybe most remarkably, he had a 1.342 OPS in 22 home games — a feat, considering the Blue Rocks play in a pitcher-friendly park.

“In a short period of time in high A, he’s done really well,” Manager Dave Martinez said before the Nationals’ series finale against the Kansas City Royals. “I try to keep track of these guys, and I think his OPS is over .900. His strikeout is down a little bit. His walk rate is up a little bit. When he hits the ball, he hits the ball hard. And he’s walking, so that’s a good sign. They felt like this is the time to move him up, and he definitely deserved to get his shot.”
