Senior midfielder Wells Flinn scored 45 seconds into overtime Saturday to lift Haverford School to an 11-10 victory over Georgetown Prep (MD) Saturday at the DC IAC/Inter-Ac League Challenge at Episcopal Academy.
The event featured six games at EA between the two prep league powers. Each league earned three victories.
Flinn, an Air Force commit, dodged to his left and scored right-handed for his fourth of the game to improve Haverford School (ranked No. 4 by Phillylacrosse.com) to 2-0. Georgetown Prep fell to 3-2 with its only other loss to MIAA powerhouse St. Mary’s.
“I just saw the ball move around the perimeter and into my stick,” Flinn said. “I saw the defense wasn’t prepared to slide and decided to dodge.
“I enjoyed representing Philly. Georgetown Prep was a good team and we worked together and played well to get the win.”
Colin Zeller added three goals and Brady O’Kane scored twice, his second one late in regulation to force the tie. Wills Burt had a goal and an assist and Aydan DiRocco dished three assists. Haverford dominated at the faceoff X as Ben McCarthy (nine groundballs) and Griff Meyer combined to go 18 of 25. The Fords had seized a 9-8 fourth-quarter lead on a Zeller goal, but Georgetown University commits Larry and brother Owen Horning gave the Prep a 10-9 advantage.
“Our offense is playing well together and is drawing slides and moving the ball well,” Flinn said. “We need to continue to play together and play egoless lacrosse.”
