Gonzaga (DC) only took the lead once against rival Georgetown Prep (Md.) in their highly anticipated matchup on Thursday night at Georgetown University. The Purple Eagles are not complaining.

On the first possession of sudden-death overtime, senior Devin Geary scored the winning goal on a point-blank shot, assisted by classmate Robbie Bath, to give Gonzaga a 10-9 victory before 2,000 fans at Cooper Field. Prior to the goal, the Eagles (4-4) had either trailed or been tied the entire night. Geary’s goal gave Gonzaga its first victory in the series since 2019, also an overtime win at Cooper Field.

“This game between Gonzaga and Georgetown Prep never disappoints,” Gonzaga coach Jeff King said afterward. “We circle this one on the calendar because of the atmosphere, because of the great friendships between both programs. It’s special to be a part of it. … This is a great way to go into Easter weekend.”

On Thursday night, the Little Hoyas (5-3) took a 9-7 lead on a goal by senior Ciaran McCleary with 2 minutes 43 seconds remaining in regulation. Georgetown Prep won the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over near midfield. Gonzaga senior Charlie McNamara gained possession and fired a pinpoint pass to senior Freddy Fowler, who scored from close range to bring Gonzaga within 9-8 with 2:16 to play.
