Virginia Tech basketball fans just received some exciting news as Top 75 center Ryan Jones just announced his commitment to the Hokies live on 247Sports. Jones joins Tyler Johnson on the Hokies commit list to push the Hokies to the 25th-best recruiting class for the 2024 in a major win for the Virginia Tech program.

Jones, a 6’8″ center who has some positional versatility and can also play power forward, has been towards the top of Virginia Tech’s list for a while and assistant coach Kevin Giltner led the way in the recruiting efforts. The Hokies beat out a number of schools to earn the Gainsville native’s commitment including Florida, Miami, LSU, Xavier, Louisville, Texas A&M, Illinois, Missouri, NC State, and Georgia Tech among others.

RJ, currently the 67th overall recruit and 12th best center in the 2024 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, will bring a much-needed post presence next season with Robbie Beran and Mekhi Long both set to see their eligibility expire. While Jones isn’t a perfect replacement for either one he will provide a perfect match for how Mike Young likes to play. RJ is a big-bodied forward who is not afraid to use his strength to create space and is a very good rebounder. Not to mention one of his best attributes is his perimeter shooting and how he can stretch the floor offensively, often noted for how well he can execute the pick and pop, something Virginia Tech did really well with last season using Grant Basile. While he might not be an elite athlete, Jones moves very well for his size and should be able to adapt to ACC basketball fairly easily from a physical standpoint.
