When Episcopal’s Tad Tan lined up for the biggest kick of his life Saturday afternoon, Georgetown Prep coaches called a timeout.
On the home sideline in Alexandria, Tan used the minute-long break to discuss with assistant coach Dan Malloy how they’d celebrate when he converted the 20-yard field goal attempt. Moments later, Tan lined up again — just for Prep to call another timeout. Teammates instilled belief in Tan while coaches asked him to attempt a practice kick into a net. Tan declined; the senior said he was confident.
“I’m trying to clear my head,” Tan said. “I’m trying to just talk to my teammates. Anything but think about the kick.”
When Tan took the field a third time, he drilled the kick as time expired to give Episcopal a 17-14 win. He turned to Prep’s sideline and raised his arms before removing his helmet, tossing it into the air and sprinting toward Episcopal’s student section.
