Some familiar feelings, the ones you would prefer to forget, started to creep back into Bud Coombs’s mind. The DeMatha senior running back lay flat on the turf at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, face down, as the sideline to his right roared. His fumble had given Good Counsel a lifeline.
Each of the previous two years, this game on this field had resulted in heartbreak for DeMatha. The Stags had come up one score and one win short of a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title both times. So when Coombs made a rare error just 20 yards from the end zone in the second half Sunday night, capitulation would have been understandable. But for Coombs, a senior, the four years of work that went into this moment couldn’t end this way — not again.
“Bad stuff happens,” Coombs said. “But good players, they just bounce back.”
