DCSAA Announces March 18 Start Date for Spring Sports
The District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) today announced that with the District under a Public Health Emergency until March 17, the DCSAA has scheduled a spring sports season beginning March 18. Per the Mayor of the District of Columbia, high school extracurricular sports activities and competitions are suspended for DC public schools, public charter schools, private schools and parochial schools during the Public Health Emergency.
“We look forward to a return to play as soon as it is deemed safe,” DCSAA Executive Director Clark Ray said. “We know the positive impact that athletics have on our student-athletes and will do everything we can to resume play under safe conditions.”
With the Public Health Emergency extended through mid-March, it will not be possible to hold DCSAA fall or winter sports championships.
“We know that some leagues that include DCSAA member schools plan to hold fall or winter sports in the spring,” Ray said. “Once the District’s Public Health Emergency is no longer in effect, the DCSAA will support member schools if they choose to have their fall or winter teams compete. There will not be traditional restrictions on season start or end dates.
“The DCSAA also will continue to monitor the situation and maintain the flexibility to return to play as soon as we can. We appreciate the leadership and clear direction of Mayor Bowser and know that she has the health and safety of our student-athletes and all District residents first and foremost.”
