DeMatha Catholic announced last week that legendary head football coach Bill McGregor is taking a leave of absence from his coaching duties due to personal reasons. The school said McGregor will continue serving the football program as Director of Football Operations while away from the sidelines.
Stepping in as interim head coach is Bryce Bevill (’90), a DeMatha graduate and Athletic Hall of Fame member. Bevill brings coaching experience at the high school, college and professional levels, including previous stops at Bishop McNamara, Bishop Ireton, Howard University, the University of Maryland and the New York Jets organization.
McGregor enters the leave following another remarkable season. The Stags finished 11-0 in 2025, captured the WCAC championship, and were nationally ranked after defeating several top programs, including Gonzaga twice during the season.
One of the most accomplished coaches in Maryland high school football history, McGregor owns a career record of 334-53-3 over two tenures at DeMatha. He ranks among the state’s all-time winningest coaches and has built one of the nation’s premier football programs during his decades leading the Stags.
The Stags are expected to remain one of the area’s top teams entering the 2026 season, returning several highly regarded recruits while opening the year as one of Maryland’s highest-ranked programs.
DeMatha has not announced a timetable for McGregor’s return.
