Weekend Football Predictions: DCSportsFan vs. AI

WCAC Football Schedule & Standings; IAC Football Schedule & Standings

First and foremost, a public apology to Bishop McNamara’s football team. The Mustangs are legit – we think. Yes, they lost to St. Mary’s Ryken, but they also beat Gonzaga and nearly handed DeMatha their first loss in over a year. McNamara has a well deserved bye this week. So we will pick this up one week from now when they take on St. John’s in D.C.

But before we look into the future and try to predict the outcomes of this weekend’s games, we need to pause and take a look into the past. Before AI was even a thing and apps like TikTok and Instagram were home to terrible comment sections, DCSportsFan served as a vital internet hub for immature high school students (and their parents) to argue with each other behind top-secret screen names like The Guru, MenforOthers and the ever-controversial DCSF insider “Stone”. Every now and then, we run across a former WCAC, IAC or MAC grad who hid behind a user name on the forums.

For those who weren’t there or had not been born yet, 2014 Bullis graduate James Barlia posted the following about DCSportsFan on LinkedIn.

If you weren’t from DC, this won’t make any sense to you.

But if you were… you know that DCSportsFan raised a generation.

We didn’t need Woj or Yahoo Sports. We had Big Game Johnson – some anonymous guy in a fleece vest with a Nikon D90 camera, blogging like his rent depended on it. He told us which junior at Paul VI had “raw talent but no motor” and who “looked disinterested in warmups.” That was gospel.

While some of you watched Sportscenter, we were getting kicked off the DCSportsFan forums for calling a ref “a stain on the integrity of the game” after a missed over-the-back in the WCAC semis, or beefing with some an account named “laxdad74” for pushing false commitment rumors about one of your friends.

We accused the Washington Post of bias for putting someone from Roosevelt on First Team All-Met. And we meant it.

We had Sidwell kids claiming they “would’ve cooked in the IAC if coach let them run iso.”

We had blurry YouTube clips shot on Flip cameras with titles like “Kris Jenkins BAPTIZES Episcopal” and “Melo too cold.”

Some account named “WCACTruth” would post a ranking of “Top 10 Most Intimidating Gyms” and kids would actually lose sleep over it – then argue in their AP History class about it the next day.

There was some kid from GDS LIVING in Big Game Johnson’s inbox begging him to “come watch practice.”

There were legit arguments among teenagers about why Good Counsel should be ranked #2 behind Landon in the weekly DMV Top 5 because of “strength of schedule.”

There was a Prep dad hyping up his son’s “elite midrange game and defensive IQ” under a burner, while quietly emailing Big Game Johnson to ask why he didn’t get mentioned in the recap.

We knew the backup point guard at O’Connell – his assist-to-turnover ratio, AAU coach, and SAT score. We knew what Big Game Johnson thought of his lateral quickness. That was journalism.

DCSportsFan was our local paper, our ESPN, our church bulletin, our underground blog. It was total chaos, and unregulated, and beautiful.

And if none of this makes sense to you, please stay out of my mentions.

And with that being said, onto the predictions.
