St. Mary’s Ryken announced Tuesday Gary Wynn as the school’s new Head Football Coach. Coach Wynn takes over a program that won three Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Metro Division Championships.
Coach Wynn has been a member of the SMR Community for over 6 years and is deep-rooted in the climate and culture. Previously, Coach Wynn was the Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the team. He is also an SMR math teacher and head track and field coach.
“I like to coach and teach with infectious energy and passion,” said Coach Wynn. “Everything I do is grounded in my faith and I plan to bring all of these things to my coaching style as the new St. Mary’s Ryken Head Football Coach.”
“Coach Wynn is highly regarded with our student-athletes and a well-respected teacher within our school community,” said Principal Catherine Bowes. “The SMR administration has full confidence in Coach Wynn to lead our football program.”
“Coach Wynn immediately stood out to the search committee because of his vision and mission – first approach for the SMR football program,” said Athletic Director Jon Lombardo. “Gary practices the Xaverian values of compassion, humility, simplicity, trust and zeal in his actions and his teachings. He is a proven mentor to so many SMR students in the classroom and in the athletic arena. He has an intimate knowledge of what it takes to be successful at SMR and in the WCAC with big dreams for football and our surrounding community. He has positively impacted every teacher, staff member and student he has encountered with his energy and love for our community. He is simply the right football coach for SMR.
In addition to managing the football program, Coach Wynn will work closely with the Athletic Administration and the Admissions Department to assist with recruitment and retention of student-athletes. “I look forward to working alongside Coach Wynn and the entire SMR Athletics team to create a transformational experience at SMR for those in our surrounding community with big dreams for football,” continued Coach Lombardo.
As SMR Associate Head Coach, Coach Wynn was part of the coaching staff who led the team to three WCAC Metro Division Championships and the best record in school history. Coach Wynn plans to focus on capturing a fourth championship by winning the off season. “I have already met with members of the coaching staff, as well as the St. Mary’s Ryken Director of Strength and Conditioning, Jacob Connor. The plan is to not only improve as athletes but as a coaching staff as well.”
During his college years, Coach Wynn played NCAA Division II football at Bowie State University.
Previously, from 2009-2015, Coach Wynn was the Head JV Football Coach, Head Indoor Track Coach, Running Back Position Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach at Patuxent High School. In these positions, students-athletes won the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Championship and the Maryland State 2A Regional Championship.
Coach Wynn has a bachelor’s of science degree in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Bowie State University.
Coach Wynn, his wife Christina and their family reside in Calvert County, Maryland. Coach Wynn has two sons who attend St. Mary’s Ryken, Elijah ’24 and Isaiah ’24. He will maintain his teaching responsibilities through the end of this school year. A new head track and field coach will be announced next week.
