Full Position Description
St. Albans School, an independent Episcopal school for boys in Grades 4-12, seeks a dynamic, experienced, skilled educator, administrator, and coach to lead its football program. Located in Northwest Washington, D.C., St. Albans School sits on the 59-acre Cathedral Close, which is also home to Washington National Cathedral, the National Cathedral School for Girls (NCS), and Beauvoir, the National Cathedral Elementary School.
St. Albans, which has an enrollment of 590 students, is an academically rigorous school with a proud athletic history. The school sees athletics as an extension of its educational and character-forming mission, requiring every student in grades 4 through 12 to engage in athletics. As a school that has both an athletics requirement and competes in one of the strongest athletics conferences in the area, St. Albans has two goals for its Athletic Department: first, to field competitive teams in an increasingly complex athletic landscape; and second, to create and execute a curriculum that instills the mission and values of the school in each and every St. Albans student. In achieving those goals, athletics at STA serves the larger institutional priorities of building community, building character, and playing a fundamental role in the overall St. Albans experience.
The school also has a proud football tradition with a long and distinguished history of excellence, and we are seeking to reclaim that tradition of excellence as we move into the future. We have a number of graduates playing at the collegiate level; a handful of former players have gone to play professionally, and one was recently inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. As importantly, the program has a history of creating an inclusive environment that welcomes players of all abilities and delivers the values of the program, Athletic Department, and school to every player.
Football begins at St. Albans in the earliest grades when our C and B Formers (4th and 5th graders) are introduced to the game as part of their physical education curriculum. Beginning in A Form (6th grade), our students can choose to play interscholastic tackle football as their fall sport, and starting in the Upper School (high school), students can join summer football workouts led by the football coaches to prepare for the upcoming season. In the Upper School, the varsity and JV football teams compete in the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC), an independent school league with six members including St. Albans, and play a slate of out-of-conference games with area teams. The Upper School team is eligible to compete in the post-season in DCSAA Class A Football Championship after the close of the IAC season.

- Develop and communicate an inspiring vision for how the St. Albans football program will compete at a high level in the IAC and deliver the values of the Athletics Department to all players.
- Hire, develop, and manage coaches at all levels that will effectively execute the head coach’s vision and strategic goals.
- Educate and inspire each player to be the best football player he can be, equipped with the skills, strategies, and habits necessary to find success.
- Collaborate with other St. Albans coaches as well as with the faculty by attending Athletics Department meetings, Upper and Lower School faculty meetings when possible, Upper and Lower School lunch when possible, and Upper and Lower School chapel services.
- Partner with the Admissions Office to recruit and enroll mission-appropriate student-athletes.
- Actively support our players who wish to play at the collegiate level by providing our players and parents with guidance regarding the recruiting process, engaging with college coaches to advocate for our players, and supporting the work of the College Office.
- Deepen ties with the local youth football community to strengthen the St. Albans football brand and cultivate a pipeline for admissions and staffing.
- Work closely with the Athletic Trainers to ensure the health and safety of every football player at St. Albans and model commitment to player health in every setting.
- Collaborate with the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach to create a strength and conditioning program that prevents injury, promotes wellness, and prepares our players for success on the field.
- In cooperation with the Athletic Director, manage all program logistics, including scheduling, transportation, equipment procurement, uniform procurement, and stewardship of facilities.
- Abide by the standards of the IAC and the school.
- Represent the values and standards of the community, including those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and adhere to the policies and expectations stated in the Faculty-Staff Handbook.
- Work with the Headmaster to determine other areas of formal responsibility within the community.
Qualifications:
A successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence, the highest standards of professionalism, the ability to work effectively with different constituencies, and a capacity to create a mission-centered culture dedicated to the ideal of the “scholar-athlete.” The individual must have integrity, drive, vision, a deep knowledge of football, a proven record of outstanding coaching, an abiding commitment to education, and a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
A full-time hire must demonstrate the ability to contribute to the school in areas beyond football, whether as a full-time coach and educator in PE/Athletics throughout all the sports seasons or in another role.
