Butch Davis to Attend Banquet
Halloween was in full swing yesterday as three different games in the IAC provided various tricks and treats. Episcopal pulled a rabbit out of their hat and beat St. Stephen’s 14-12, Georgetown Prep hammered St. Albans 34-7 while Landon took care of business, defeating Bullis, 31-8. Senior quarterback Sam McDonough only threw four passes but completed three of them, including two touchdowns in the first quarter.
“We tried to take advantage of what Bullis’s defense was doing,” McDonough said. “We opened up the passing game early and well.”
Not only did Landon’s passing game connect, their offensive line created big holes to open up the running game for junior running back Wynston Bouknight (3 carries, 41 yards) and Joe Paoletta (11 carries, 77 yards). Bouknight scored first for Landon on a 34-yard touchdown run.
Bullis gained possession next but could not move beyond their 15-yard line due to the Bears’ aggressive defense. As a result, Landon regained possession and McDonough took advantage. The senior quarterback found senior receiver Andy Wills for an 18-yard touchdown pass. After a successful two-point conversion, the Bears lead 14-0.
Bullis got the ball back, but it was the same story for the Bulldogs as they failed to gain any substantial yardage. The outcome: a lost fumble that Landon’s Bouknight took advantage of on an 8-yard touchdown run.
After yet another Bullis punt, senior receiver Austin Dodson beat his defender deep down the field and McDonough found him alone for a 56-yard bomb. With the score 28-0, the first quarter came to an end. The second quarter proved to be considerably more competitive. Still, Landon struck the scoreboard with a 27-yard field goal from junior Bradley Grossman that sent the Bears into halftime up 31-0.
The Bears dominated the game on Saturday, winning 31-8 to stay perfect in the IAC. Landon takes on Episcopal next week in an IAC showdown. The Maroon stunned St. Stephen’s with a 14-point second quarter that proved to be insurmountable. Episcopal senior Hunter de Butts led the Maroon with 59 yards on the ground and 81 through the air.
Although it wasn’t an IAC game, St. Albans and Georgetown Prep met on the football field in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. Behind Bobby Gribbin (23 carries, 98 yards), the Little Hoyas outscored St. Albans 20-0 to improve to 5-3 on the season. St. Albans, who dropped to 4-4 on the season, still has a chance to win the IAC. The Bulldogs are 2-0 in IAC play with home games against St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes on November 7 and Landon November 14.
