by Todd Bradley 10/31/2009

The first two spots for the Third Annual DCSportsFan Football Banquet have been filled. DeMatha senior running back Marcus Coker (Iowa) and Gonzaga junior quarterback Kevin Hogan made the first cut. Coker was chosen by the DCSportsFan selection committee while Hogan was voted in by the fans, receiving 498 out of the 1017 votes cast on Friday.

Also receiving votes were Good Counsel’s Louis Young (7%), McNamara’s Brandon Coleman (7%) and St. John’s Charles Brown (6%).

In seven games for DeMatha, Coker has rushed the ball 125 times for 1,340 yards and 17 touchdowns. In eight games this season for Gonzaga, Hogan has completed 101 of 175 passes for 1,455 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 353 yards and two scores.

The Third Annual DCSportsFan.com Football Banquet will be held Sunday, January 31, 2010 at George Mason University, and University of North Carolina Football Coach Butch Davis will be the featured speaker. Before leading the Tar Heels, Davis was the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes and later the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. In past years, speakers have included Virginia’s Al Groh, Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, former Redskins General Manager Charlie Casserly, Brian Mitchell and Fred Smoot.

In addition to Davis attending the banquet, DCSportsFan will change the format slightly and feature the “Super 60”, which will include the top 60 players from the six conferences DCSportsFan covers. Players will represent the WCAC, IAC, MAC, DCIAA, Montgomery County and local teams that play independently (Friendship Collegiate, Ireton, etc).

Today’s vote turns to the DCIAA. Players included in the vote consist of H.D. Woodson’s Ricardo Young, Dunbar’s Vernard Roberts, Coolidge’s Avery Williams, Dunbar’s Javarie Johnson and Ballou’s Eric Shaw. Your votes can be cast on the homepage.
