Good Counsel Beats Holy Cross, 4-1

Good Counsel, St. John's to Meet in Finals

A large and spirited crowd filled Good Counsel’s stands Friday afternoon as the Falcons hosted the Holy Cross Tartans in one of two WCAC semifinal match-ups. Though many wished for a competitive game, the Falcons extinguished any hope the Tartans had of victory beating them with ease, 4-1.

Good Counsel’s offense controlled the first half. The Falcons continuously sent through balls to players on the wings, delivered excellent crosses and made creative runs. As a result, Good Counsel’s freshman superstar, Midge Purce, struck first for the Falcons, burying a quick shot on the run to take a 1-0 lead.

Good Counsel continued to take advantage of Holy Cross’s weak defense by sending long balls to their forwards. Towards the end of the second half, Purce struck again when she received a pass, dribbled through three defenders, then finished an easy breakaway to lead the Falcons into halftime leaving 2-0.

The Falcons started the second half just as they finished the first half. Just 1:12 into the half, junior Alexis Prada struck a beautiful ball from nearly 25 yards, which sailed past the Tartans’ goalie to increase the Falcons lead to 3-0. Finally, just a few minutes after Prada’s goal, Purce netted a breakaway goal for a hat trick and lead her team to 4-1 victory and WCAC finals appearance.

“Obviously, we want to win Sunday,” Purce said her team. “We played really well as a team today, and we need to play like that in the finals.”

As Holy Cross comes up short, the Falcons look to finish their season strong on Sunday afternoon as they take on St. John’s, who entered tournament play as the No. 8 seed. The Cadets beat Paul VI 4-0 Friday to coast into championship.
