One week after having their 20-game winning streak snapped in a four-point loss to Damascus, the Sherwood Warriors rebounded Friday with a resounding 17-0 home victory over previously unbeaten Churchill.
“It’s huge,” Sherwood senior defensive lineman Greg Grant said about the win. “We came out here and laid an egg last week, beat ourselves. We came out here [and] played mistake-free football at the most and we came out with a W against a really good Churchill team.”
The 17-point loss marked Churchill’s first setback this season. The Bulldogs (7-1) entered the contest averaging 30 points per game but hadn’t faced a team of Sherwood’s caliber. The Warriors’ defense registered its fifth shutout this season.
“Our coaching staff is really great,” added Grant. “We came up with a good game plan that gave our linebackers an opportunity to be able to flow over the top and make some key tackles in the game.”
Offensively, the Warriors were sparked by junior running back Cyrus Britt who finished with 128 yards rushing on 28 carries and scored a touchdown. Sherwood (7-1) regained some momentum following last weekend’s loss.
“It brought a lot of confidence back to Sherwood High School on the football team,” said Britt, who transferred to the Sandy Spring public school from private school Carroll in Northeast Washington. “We got our mojo back.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Sherwood drove 45 yards in seven plays, which was capped by Britt’s 6-yard touchdown run with 9:10 remaining in the second quarter.
Facing a fourth down situation late in the first half, Sherwood opted to kick a field goal instead of going for the touchdown. The play resulted in Andy Estrain’s 20-yard kick that gave the Warriors a 10-0 lead at the intermission. Britt carried the ball nine times on Sherwood’s 65-yard scoring drive.
With time running out in the third quarter, Sherwood went 62 yards in five plays, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by senior running back Kye Hopkins. The key play in the drive was Britt’s 39-yard catch and run.
“Cyrus is amazing,” said Grant. “He’s a roadrunner. He’s a great player. He has the speed and he has the agility to make anything a touchdown.”
Game MVP: Cyrus Britt
The junior transfer rushed for 128 yards on 28 carries and scored on a 6-yard run. He also set up Sherwood’s other two scores.
