Baseball Power Rankings (3/31)

Photos from St. John's @ Ireton

1. Bishop Ireton (7-0)
I know what you're thinking. Bishop Ireton at No. 1? It's hard to imagine the Cardinals atop any type of poll that has something to do with athletics. Think again. These guys can flat out play. Not only did they win their first five games, but they managed to win the next two in one-run victories over St. John's AND Paul VI. The Cardinals have games against Gonzaga, O'Connell and DeMatha the rest of the week, and it's realistic to think these guys could be 10-0.

2. St. Albans (5-4)
People looking at record alone probably question why St. Albans is ranked No. 2. The answer is simple. The Bulldogs haven't lost a conference game since April 7, 2007, which just happens to be the last time they lost to a team from the Washington, D.C. area. Until they lose to a local team, St. Albans stays at or near the top.

3. DeMatha (5-3)
The Stags have suffered two one-run losses this season to St. Albans and Calvert Hall, but they have also beaten both Paul VI and St. John's. Other than an 11-0 loss to Stone Bridge to open the season, DeMatha has looked like the returning WCAC champs.

4. St. John's (5-2)
After starting the season 5-0, the Cadets have dropped the past two. However, something tells us the seniors are going to "Get 'Em" when it counts.

5. Paul VI (4-2)
The Panthers seem to have one of the best teams in the area, but they haven't been able to string together more than two wins in a row yet. Something tells us Billy Emerson will have his boys ready when it counts.

6. Georgetown Prep (4-1)
Since an opening day loss to Good Counsel, Prep has rolled off four straight wins.

7. St. Stephen's/St. Agnes (5-2)
The Saints' five-game winning streak ended, but they appear to be a contender in the IAC.

8. Good Counsel (4-4)
It's been a few years since Good Counsel won the baseball championship, but the Falcons have another good team and should compete late into the season.

9. Gonzaga (3-4)
The Eagles were on the losing end of a one-sided loss to Good Counsel, but expect Gonzaga to compete with Ireton today.

10. Maret (4-1)
Maret put up 40 runs in two games Saturday against St. James.

11. Landon (2-2)
The Bears were only able to get in one game during their trip to North Carolina, but Landon will have a shot twice at Prep this week.

12. O'Connell (4-3)
After three straight losses to Gonzaga, St. John's and Paul VI, O'Connell beat Ryken 9-0 to get over .500.

13. Episcopal (2-1)
Episcopal hasn't played in over a week, but the Maroon return to action against St. Stephen's twice this week.

14. Sidwell Friends (4-5)
Sidwell went 3-3 on a tough road trip over Spring Break down in Florida.

15. Flint Hill (3-2)
Flint Hill has won two games in a row after dropping two straight.

16. Bullis (1-1)
The Bulldogs haven't played since the 18th, but Bullis plays St. Albans twice this week.

17. Potomac School (1-2)
After dropping two straight to open the season, Potomac School beat Seton School by 10 runs for their first victory of the season.

18. Georgetown Day (0-1)
It's been two weeks since GDS played, but they return to action Saturday at St. James.

19. St. Mary's Ryken (0-4)
Their only four games have been against tough conference opponents, but Ryken needs to win some games to move up in the rankings.

20. Wilson (0-0)
Long-time Coach Eddie Saah is gone, but the Tigers will kick off the 2009 season Thursday against Gonzaga. This team has a chance to move up in the rankings if weather allows them to play some games.

21. McNamara (1-4)
McNamara got win No. 1 last week against St. Anselm's, but they have to play Paul VI and St. John's over the next two days.

22. St. James (0-3)
St. James gave up 20 runs twice in two losses to Maret last week.

23. St. Andrew's (0-3)
It's hard to move up in the rankings when you don't play, but St. Andrew's will return to action today against Potomac School.
