For the fifth consecutive year, DeMatha and Good Counsel will meet in the WCAC Championship. Both teams cruised through the first round of the playoffs with convincing victories. Good Counsel defeated McNamara 45-6 to improve to 11-0 on the season while DeMatha shut out St. John's 20-0 to win their sixth straight game.

The victories set up another meeting between Good Counsel and DeMatha at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis next Saturday night. But despite losing to Good Counsel 42-21 in front of a nationally televised audience on October 2nd, DeMatha senior quarterback Tom Chroniger believes the Stags are still the favorite.

"We got the championship last year," Chroniger said. "And the four years before that. We're the champions. I'm not hurt this year, and we've played six good games since we lost to them. We're on a roll, and it's going to be hard to stop us now."

Coming off his second straight year being named the WCAC's best quarterback, Chroniger went out Friday night and proved why he has been under center the past two seasons for one of the area's best football programs. Poor weather conditions forced the game to be played on the ground, and Chroniger carried the ball eight times for 73 yards and two touchdowns, including an unbelievable 28-yard run in the third quarter to put the Stags up 14-0.

"We had a waggle play called and both of my two reads were actually guarded," Chroniger said. "[St. John's] played it real well. As for my over-the-top read, they had three linebackers just sitting on him, so my last option was to run. I started running up field, cut it back, slipped one tackle, put a spin move on another and was able to walk in the end zone."

Chroniger, however, didn't have to do it alone. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound southpaw was aided by running back Marcus Coker and an offensive line that was able to control the line of scrimmage. Coker carried the ball 20 times for 153 yards and DeMatha's final touchdown, a 23-yard run late in the fourth quarter. It was the second time DeMatha beat St. John's this year, and the Stags will now turn their attention to the Falcons.

"They beat us on October 2nd, but we're going to come back in the championship and give it to them," said senior offensive lineman and Maryland commit Pete deSouza. "We're the champs, and we have to defend next week."

Winning their sixth straight championship won't be easy, though. Good Counsel proved Friday night why they are 11-0 and have outscored their opponents 454 to 76 this season. The Falcons, the area's No. 1 ranked team, hammered Bishop McNamara for a second time this season as Good Counsel got the job done on both sides of the ball. Caleb Porzel carried the ball nine times for 131 yards and one touchdown and returned a punt 76 yards for another score. Mike Wallace and Jelanki Jenkins both returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Chris Pitsenberger recovered a fumble in the end zone late in the third quarter.

The WCAC Championship will be played next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. It will be the fifth consecutive meeting between DeMatha and Good Counsel, but the Falcons are still searching for their first win.
