WCAC Standings; In-Game Updates
With the regular season coming to a close and the playoffs rapidly approaching, Good Counsel and McNamara met Saturday afternoon with both teams still competing for a shot at the WCAC Championship. Good Counsel struck fast on the ground, and then used an air attack and a stifling defense to beat a tough McNamara team, 42-6, in Olney.
Caleb Porzel and Jelani Jenkins led the ground attack, with Porzel racking up 112 yards on 11 carries while Jenkins carried the ball eight times for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Louis Young made big plays on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball for the Falcons. Young caught four passes for 85 yards and one touchdown and returned an interception 75 yards for another score. McNamara, however, never seemed to give up and their toughness left an impression on a lot of the Falcons players, including Young.
"They are a tough team, and they played with a lot of heart," Young said. "No matter what the scoreboard showed, they played like it was a tied game the whole time. I think we redeemed ourselves from how we played last week, we corrected the things that needed work and took another step forward to our ultimate goal in becoming WCAC Champions."
The game started off fast with Caleb Porzel taking the hand off and scoring on a 64-yard touchdown, giving the Falcons a quick burst of energy. Good Counsel's defense seemed fired up and forced the Mustangs to punt, but McNamara was not intimidated. The Mustangs forced a fumble and recovered it in Good Counsel territory but were not able to come up with any points. On Good Counsel's next drive, the Falcons scored again on Jelani Jenkins' first touchdown of the game, giving the Falcons a 14-0 lead.
With their defense firing on all cylinders, Good Counsel quarterback Tyler Campbell (8 for 12, 127 yards) found Young on a 40-yard touchdown pass. On the following possession Young struck again. McNamara went to the air and were able to make some big plays and drive the ball deep into Falcons territory, but Young stepped up, picked off a pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown, giving the Falcons a 28-0 lead.
McNamara was able to get on board before halftime with a 1-yard run by Kevin Clark (6-15-74-1), but Good Counsel got the ball back and scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to junior receiver EJ Scott, giving the Falcons a 35-6 lead heading into halftime.
The second did not have very many big plays, with both teams playing hard defense, but Good Counsel was able to score on a 30-yard touchdown run by Jenkins, which made it a 42-6 final.
Good Counsel (7-0, 4-0) is back in action next Friday night against St. John's (6-1, 4-0) at home, while McNamara (3-4, 1-3) looks to bounce back Saturday against Carroll (1-6, 0-4).
