For the second consecutive year, Good Counsel and Dunbar met early in the season and the Falcons walked away victorious. Good Counsel scored at least one touchdown in every quarter as the Falcons defeated Dunbar, 42-12. Jelani Jenkins only carried the ball seven times, but he scored four times while Caleb Porzel (Maryland) rushed the ball 13 times for 107 yards and one touchdown.
The two-year contract between the two schools proved to be very one sided. Good Counsel won last year's game 38-12 and this year's game was clearly no contest. Although Dunbar did score the first touchdown of the game, which came on an 80-yard pass from Tyree White to Deon Long (West Virginia), the Falcons scored the next four touchdowns.
Jelani Jenkins punched the ball in from one yard out to tie the game at seven. Porzel gave the Falcons the lead with a 21-yard run later in the first quarter. Jenkins then increased Good Counsel's lead in the second quarter to 21 points on a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs. Dunbar, however, fought back in the form of Deon Long.
Long, who verbally committed to West Virginia this past April, followed up his 80-yard reception with a 98-yard kickoff return, which brought Dunbar within 16 points. After stopping Good Counsel's offense, Dunbar managed to put together another strong drive, which set the Crimson Tide up inside the Falcons 10-yard line. But instead of converting a red zone touchdown, Good Counsel cornerback Mike Wallace stepped in front of White's pass and intercepted the ball. Wallace also led the Falcons with three receptions for 28 yards.
"It was just a straight cover-2, and I was just watching the quarterback's eyes all the way," Wallace said. "At halftime, we realized how big that was."
The second half was all Good Counsel. Jelani Jenkins scored his fourth touchdown on a 31-yard run to increase the lead to 23 points. The Falcon secondary stepped up again late in the game when Al Thompson intercepted White (10-19-197-4 INT) and returned it for a pick six for Good Counsel's sixth and final score.
The Falcons (1-0) will host Friendship Collegiate (1-1) next weekend before taking on St. Peter's Prep out of New Jersey September 20th. Dunbar (0-3) will play next at Fort Mills on September 19th.
